You should wait and install chrome lowers at the same time.
It's not difficult, and a svc manual is a must, but it is labor intensive.
Yes you have to drop the forks to get to the 'cans', if that is what you're talking about.
Again not hard, but timely.

Since you need to remove the lower sliders in order to change the cans out I would recommend doing it all at the same time. There's a couple DIY's on how to change the lower sliders. If you're a bit mechanically inclined and have the right tools it's a piece of cake.

I did mine and like everyone so far has said...Have a service manual...It tood me about 3 hour between a couple of beers...It was worth it...Look a lot better than the stock cans....Good luck
