Waiting on my ordered service manual, had a question on fluid change for my 1998 Heritage Softail. I have changed the motor oil and now ready to change the transmission fluids but I was informed that Harley Davidson Softails have a primary, a transmission and gear assembly that each hold there own quantity of oil. Is this true and where are they located?

Primary oil is...........well in the primary. Look under your primary cover toward the rear. You will find a drain plug.


Go around to other side of bike and look at bottom of side cover. You should see a plug between the two bottom cap screws. Thats your trans oil drain, early style. Late style drain plug bottom center of trans case according to book.

 

Thanks V-Twins/Bowties for the quick reply! I guess my question is on my generation of Softail, is the primary/transmission oil held in the primary cover section one in the same? Or is the transmission oil held elsewhere?
