I planned on testing the battery at Auto Zone before I went to HD. With the way the battery was cooking I am pretty sure it is toast. I have a service manual and have read how to test the regulator and stator so I'll try that before I start buying parts. The weird thing is, I've been having the sporadic speedo problem for a couple weeks and when the battery issue started yesterday it worked normal all day. I had checked the speedo sensor all the connections so maybe the regulator started affecting the speedo before it crapped out and fried the battery.

+1 on the voltage regulator, your battery is being overcharged. Also as mentioned clean all your connections.
Cheers!
