Default Fuel milage and gas tank question...1999 Fatboy

I have a 1999 Fatboy and I only get 100 miles out of a tank of gas. Also I only get 4 miles out of the reserve. Is this normal? It seems very low. 4 miles on a reserve had me running out of gas in shock and amazement. Not to mention all the hell I got from the two metric bikes I was riding with.

Any help would be appreciated.

Assuming that you have a five gallon tank, no way is that normal. Even if you had a Sportster peanut tank, you should get around 120 miles. I would pull the carb off and at least check the float valve. Probably do an entire rebuild and check what jets are in it also. That would be my first guess.

Did you figure out your MPG using your odometer? My 2004 Softail goes between 42-49 miles per gallon depending on how much highway driving I'm doing.

How many gallons does it take to fill up after you run out? If it takes five gallons, you have a serious carb problem....if it only takes a couple of gallons your petcock is clogged up and needs to be cleaned.

I think the 99 came with a 4 gallon tank. At 40 mpg you should be getting about 160 miles. That would be normal. At least that's what mine did. Unless someone changed your tank to a smaller one.

My 99 has the 4 gallon tank and I am averaging 52 miles to the gallon @ 75 on the road and around 43 in town. 35 if I am screwing around. You need to get something checked. Mine does have the cam, race plate, ignition upgrades but I kept the carb and had it worked on. Power to spare and mileage starts to drop off on the road after 75mph a little to about 48 running 80 out west.

Long story short I am getting around 200+ a tank. It gets even better running 70
