I have a buddy's '99 Heritage out in the shed with the rockers torn off both cylinders due to some pretty good leaks on each. I am replacing all gaskets from the head all the way up after I check to make sure nothing is warped. Hopefully this will take care of his leaks. It's a pretty nice bike when it's not covered in oil. I don't have a Softail service manual, Touring guy myself, could anyone be able to tell me the torque specs and sequence for reinstalling these and getting him back on the road? is that an Evo or a Twin Cam? on the Twin Cams the torque value is 15-18ft/lbs.. but i don't have an order of tightening for you

 

Like Sgt Jim said, is this an Evo or Twin cam?
If it's a Twin cam and you mean the rocker housing boxes:
The torque for those is: 120-168 in/lbs.
For purposes of these directions, left side (LS) means the bolts on the side with the spark plug,right side (RS)means the bolts on the intake side,front (front)means toward the front wheel,rear (rear) means toward the rear wheel.

There are 3 bolts on the front and 3 bolts in the back of each "box". So the sequence is:
Front cylinder: RS rear, LS front,LS rear,RS front,middle rear,middle front
Rear cylinder RS front,LS rear,LS front,RS rear,front middle,rear middle

This is for the rocker covers :
Front cylinder: LS middle, RS Middle, LS rear,RS front,LS front, RS rear
Rear cylinder: LS middle, RS middle,LS front,RS rear, LS rear,RS front
As mentioned: 15-18 ft./lbs

Do you know how to install the rocker arm support plates? If not, post for advice so you don't bend the push rods. The support plate bolts get tightened to 18-22 ft/lbs but both lifters of the cylinder being serviced must be on the base circle of the cam. Basically, the 4 rocker arm support plate bolts get tightened diagonally.

Disregard all directions as it looks like you have an EVO

 

Thanks guys. It's a Evo. Ran by Laconia HD to get him a service manual, but they were out. Had to order him one. Just so we're all on the same page here, I have all 3 pieces of the assy. off, right down to the top of the heads. The plate that mount on top of the head with the rockers in them , the middle spacer and the covers. I am going to check everything out put it all back together tomorrow. Keep it coming if it looks like anyone missed anything. I found my old manual from my '85 Evo, just want to make sure nothing changed. And yes, I know to make sure I'm on the base circle before tightening the rocker arms down.

 

Do you guys know what the rocker cover torque specs would be in inch pounds if they were 15 to 18 ft lb ?? I only have an inch pound torque wrench

 

1 foot-pound equals 12 inch-pounds

So multiply foot-pounds by 12, to get inch-pounds

15 ft-lbs = 180 in-lbs

18 ft-lbs = 216 in-lbs
