04-06 fuel tank interchangeability
Been checking ebay for a Softail fuel tank, and I've gotten some conflicting information on the interchangeability between 04-06 tanks.
Originally I found info that said the 04 and 05 tanks are the same for EFI or carb, and the 06 carb tank is the same as 04-05, but the 06 EFI tank is different.
But I've seen listings for 06 tanks that say it works for carb or EFI, and I've seen listings for tanks that say 05-06 EFI.
Does anyone know the real story about the interchangeability between these tanks?

From 2001 to 2003 Harley produced 2 tanks, a carb and an EFI. After 2004 every softail had the same tank. Here is the year break down....
2001 - 2003 carb only tank.
2004 - 2006 carb bike uses same tank as the EFI (the top plate was just a block off, no guts in the tank. Carb bikes ended in 2006)
2001 - 2006 EFI tanks are interchangeable from bike to bike (though from 01 to 04 there were 2 bungs on the bottom of the tank. One is usually plugged off.)
2007 - up EFI, the pump changes and so does the shape in the opening of the tank.

Here are some direct answers to your questions...
All 04-06 tanks are interchangeable between all softails. But, you must keep the pump/plate with the bike it came on. For example you can take a tank from an 04 carb and put it on a 06 EFI bike as long as you keep the top plates with the bikes they came on.
All 04-06 tanks are the same, except that the 04 has 2 bungs on the bottom, one of which is usually plugged up.
The reason they say 05-06 EFI is because the 05-06 tanks only have 1 bung on the bottom
Hope my answers aren't too confusing! Hahahahaha
