1000 mile "break in service" - is it necessary?
Just recently traded in my 48 for a new slim and just hit 1000 miles. The stealer wants $350 for a 1000 mile service (includes syn3 upgrade).
What do you all think? is it necessary? I did pay to have it done on my sporty, but that was my first bike and had no clue what i was against - now that i have done plenty of oil changes, full stage one, apehangers.. i feel that I am somewhat mechanically capable of preforming a standard service.
Not sure what to do.. they are already robbing me because they said that if I installed my new V&H BSS myself it would void the warranty and that they wouldn't do the dyno tune.
So with that said, they are already getting $600 bucks out of me for that labor that I am more than comfortable doing.
FYI... for the sporty I would only take it in every 5000 miles for service. I did all the 2500 mile services myself.
Thanks,

just went over 1200 miles on my new 2012 RKC,,I thought the 1K service was free, but yeah,,300 bones,,I'm doing it my self,,did 5K and 10K myself on previous RKC's,,its no big deal and I highly doubt the HD tech that does the service really gets down and dirty on a bike than runs fine,,and is that new,,save yourself the $$ and buy a few tools and do your own service

I would certainly encourage you to get it done, regardless of who does it. You want to dump that factory fluid and get some good stuff in there (Mobil 1). They are already robbing you on the exhaust install and refusal to dyno if you do it yourself. I have done ALL the routine services on my bike and you can too, including this one. The only possible reason I could see where having the Dealer do it is that they do catch any recalls, updates, etc that you may not be aware of or know what to look for. And you do not have to have it done by your SELLING Dealer to protect your warranty, any Dealer can and will do it. Also indys.

YES...just adding air to your tires voids HD warranty...
I assume, if you had catastrophic failure during warranty coverage, HD would assess & determing if missed service was cause. I know our local dealership told me to just keep reciepts & log service...

So would self performing the break in service void the warranty? How do you document that the proper service has been performed if there were to be an issue? The last thing I would want to happen is something to go bad within my warranty period and not get it fixed because I didnt get the service done at a HD stealership
