Detach is best; it changes easily for different scenarios. Be sure to get locks for it or you'll come back to a bike missing a sissy bar and pad. If you're doing it for looks, get the low, otherwise your pillion rider will "thank you" for a medium with a comfy back pad.

Like to know what you find out here? I need to do the same thing (along with a touring pillion), but I've heard that you need to do a rear signal relocation to put the detachable on.

Definitely go with detach.
Check out the "calling all FatBoy Lo" thread.
There's a member there that is selling a set.
It's a recent post. Maybe few pages back.

Not if you're comfortable with a dremel tool. You can just grind off about 1/8" off the back of the bracket and it will clear just fine. Just touch up the ground edge with some silver or clear paint to keep it from rusting and you'll be golden.

Here are some pics of a modified back rest. So you don't have to relocate the rear turn signals.

Thanks. Haven't really looked at how anything attaches on the strut, but do you think that grinding off that much material compromises the integrity of that latch? I'm all for not moving something that I don't have to.

On the back part of the latch that is modified there is little or no pressure applied to that area. I can't see where there should be any concern. I think HD makes them thick in the rear so that they can see relocation kits.
