As my title says I'm having problems putting everything under seat, in particular the big elco connector. My seat seems to rest on it and I'm afraid it could break or cause a short. Does anyone have a picture of how it should be or is it all just jammed under there? BTW, My fuse box also seems to be crunched, hahah And finally, the original owner had copper washers between the cables and battery, could this have something to do with electrolysis?

 

There should be just enough room between the battery and oil tank (front, back) to stuff the connector in.

It takes a bit of creativity but it can be done.

 

Electrolysis??...don't think so. Copper is just a good conductor of electricity.


Looks like you have an aftermarket battery, and the terminals were extended outward with a nut or nut and bolt so the cables would fit.

 

Pull everything loose and repack it all in.

If you want to spend the money you could buy a Lithium Ion battery.
They are few inches shorter than an AGM battery.
I for one though are not quite sold on that technology yet for vehicle battery use.

Another option might be a deep ECM tray.
HD sells one for around $15 that is about an inch deeper than the stock one you have.

Then you might be able to route some of the wires around the other side of the battery.
But you'll have to experiment with that option since the wires might not reach around that direction.

 

I think you are exactly right about the "extended outward" part but the copper shims that he had on already were showing green corrosion and it seems to me somewhere i might have read something about that keeping the terminals clean? It kind of makes sense. BTW, the picture doesn't show the copper shims, I took them off and replaced them with a skinnier nut, the copper one's were about 1/2 inch and were pushing the cables out too far.

 

There is no way I could shove that 'elco' connector between the battery/fusebox and the oil tank. I'm beginning to think that maybe this after market battery is too big. if anyone has everything in there with room left over could you please post a picture of how it should go?

 

I am interested in this, do you have to get it at the Harley dealer? I can't seem to locate one on ebay, would you know a better "search" term for it?

 

A deep ecm tray comes with the softail fuel pak which I bought used.
However the guy I bought the fuel pak from didn't need it for his bike and had misplaced it.

So I went to the dealer and they had one in stock for around $15.
To my surprise about two weeks later I got a package in the mail and it was a deep ecm tray.
The guy I bought the fuel pak from found it and sent it to me.

So what I'm getting at is that I have an extra deep ECM tray so if your local dealer doesn't have one PM me and if you'll pay the shipping I'll give it to you.

You are probably better off just going to the Dealer and seeing if they have one.
They are only about $15.
