Default 32 or 40 ounces of primary oil?

Okay, H-D service manual for my '12 Slim says to fill the primary with the following amount of oil (I just swapped out the cover):

32 oz wet
40 oz dry

Huh? What is that supposed to mean? If I drain the oil, swap out the primary cover... Is it now considered wet or dry?

Did you swap out the whole primary cover, or just the derby cover?

If it was the whole primary cover, you're looking at a dry change. The wet means you just drained it, and there is still residual fluid inside the primary, hence the wet change.

Man, thanks Redbeard! I removed/swapped the primary cover so I'll do 40 oz.

Wrenching with a massive hangover may not have been the best idea!

Forget about wet, dry, how many ounces...

If you know how to check the lube level in the primary, you don`t have to remember how much to put in, or worry about wet, dry or any of that unnecessary stuff...

Knowing how many ounces the primary takes won`t help you if you are on the road somewhere, spot a small leak, and you want to check to see if the level is correct....

Stand the bike upright.

Add lube until it touches the outside diameter of the clutch shell.

Same for every Harley big twin wet clutch.

I split the difference and went with 36, mainly because of the amount that came out... it sure wasn't 40.
That, and all the dire warnings I've seen about overfilling
