Default softail evo vs.

So my buddy and I like to go for cruises often and they usually result in a little drag racing action. he has a 08' sporty 1200, while I have a 99' fxst evo. both bikes have ac and exhaust, his is fuel injected with a PC, while I have my cv carb rejetted. we started at a roll one time around 40mph and reached about 100 with him maybe a bike length ahead at the most. its actually a pretty close race. we also ran it from a stop and were dead even till about 3rd where he slightly pulls ahead twards the top of the gear. I am wondering if a cam will allow me to pull on this damn thing and leave him in some evo dust!!

1. What's the current condition of your engine? How many miles, etc... 2. The 1200 sporty is no slouch. My first bike was an 08 1200C.

A cam could do it, but I'd say you might need a little more... best bet is probably swapping to a lower drive.

My bike just hit 20k miles the other day. Seems to run great, most of my power seems to be up high in the rev range. I don't stand a chance if im not really winding it up and riding the crap out of it. Any good bolt on mod recommendations would be appreciated to open her up a bit.

you've already done the ac/exhaust/carb mods. There's not lot more to be done but change the pulleys for a better drive ratio. After that, you're gonna have to open her up and start changing parts... how bad you wanna win this race?

I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but I would like to be "faster" I know what my bike is for and I didn't buy it to drag race. it seems to get out of its own way pretty good and I would like to get as much as I can out of it without spending a fortune. maybe a bump in compression? whats the easiest and least expensive way to go about that?

cheapest... mill the heads. Problem is, with the increased compression, you'll want a cam to complement it, port and polish the heads, roller rockers, etc..... speed is a drug. I've spent my life pursuing it. Whether on a bike, or behind the wheel of a musclecar.

That sounds good, ill have to look into having the heads milled. I am willing to order a cam asap. Sounds like ill need a specific cam for high compression as apposed to a cam for a stock compression motor?
