Default Windshield cleaning question

1994 Heritage Softail, on the windshield it appears that it has some sort of clear coating on the lexan windshield. It is flaking off in some places, and it is quite dull and faded. I'm wondering what to clean it with, the average mild cleaners I doubt would work on this. I was almost thinking of picking up a headlight restoration kit for cars and polishing the windshield up with that but that could damage the windshield worse than before. Thanks.

yes there is /was a coating on the w/shield.
I spent many hours with all kinds of "cleaners" and mine still looked bad

You can get a new one for about one hundred, check on sponsors ads.

That's a lot of years on a windshield. I replace windshields about every 2- 3 years. they get scratched and pitted from road debris over time.

You really can't effectively restore the windshield. I spent many hours trying though. You will cut through the coating on the area you are working on and then it won't match the rest of the windshield. If you have a very small spot you can get away with it using Novus. Many HD dealers carry it or you can find it on Amazon. In my case I finally got pissed and bought me a new windshield. It comes with the gaskets too.

My windshield is on a 06 Road King so I don't know if the film is the same but....I read on one of the forums that the film can be removed with rubbing alcohol. I saturated a rag and let it sit in an area on the shield and it softened it enough to be wiped off with a dry terry washcloth. Film on mine was on the rider side. Certainly cleared it up and I plan to do the rest of the shield soon. I think it will be good enough to get me through another season or two as I don't ride with the shield in the summer months here in Texas.

I see a new shield on Ur Christmas list,

Once that protective covering is gone,, ITs GONE... only way to restore it is with a new one.

There are DIY kits on the market for restoring automotive headlight lenses when the plastic yellows and becomes cloudy. I've seen amazing results with the kits on car headlights and always wondered if they would also work on a lexan windscreen.

U might also try to remove all the protective film on the shield and then try buffing it out.

I have a couple small spots thats (peeled off) ours but its not dull or yellowed, Our bike sits in our garage 100% of the time when its not on the road. That probably helps keeps the shield from fading.

I haven't done anything special I just used a cleaner made for lexan "Plexus" and its done good job.
