dip stick leaking oil

dip stick leaking oil
I have a 09 heritage classic that was leaking oil from the dipstick. Someone suggested I replace the dipstick so I bought a new HD one with a thermometer. It does not leak anymore from there. Now it leaks from the rubber hose under the tank. I put a new clamp on but I am wondering if the dipstick is going to pop out while riding. The package for the dipstick said it was for a softail but is it the wrong one?

Different year and model bikes require different positions for measuring the oil level. Your 09 Softail requires that the bike is resting on the kick stand when checking the oil. Below is an excerpt from the 09 Softail service manual.
The Temp Dipstick you purchased is a Mulit-Fit item. It will stay in place as long as excessive pressure does not build up in the tank. Having said that, heat eventually degrades the rubber seal and they have been known to leak and even dislodge after years of use.
- Oil level cannot be accurately measured on a cold engine. For pre-ride inspection, with motorcycle leaning on jiffy stand on level ground, oil should register on dipstick between arrows when engine is cold. Do not add oil to bring the level to the FULL mark on a COLD engine. (00185a)
Ride motorcycle until engine is warmed up to operating temper- ature, then do the following.- Idle motorcycle on jiffy stand for 1-2 minutes.
- Shut motorcycle off and leave motorcycle resting on jiffy
stand. - Check oil level on dipstick. If necessary, add oil until oil registers at upper groove on dipstick. Do not overfill oil tank.
