The stock unit has an open "port" on the front for air intake, and the screamin eagle model does not have this air intake.

Seems like air coming in from the front is a good idea. Any idea why the screamin eagle does not have this feature?

The Screamin' Eagle air cleaner has more to do with the backing plate than the cover. The backing plate acts like a modified velocity stack and increases airflow into the throttle body. The cover is more or less cosmetic since the filter element is open all the way around.
