Jim, changing the link is a great idea! I went ahead and ordered one, though not the same one you did. One thing I noticed though, the shaft that connects the pedal to the connecting arm is so sloppy that even with a better link there's a lot of play. Is yours like that, or did HD just do a sloppy job boring. (I've found that the metal they used for the casting is pretty soft, but I can't believe that it could get so sloppy in only 6K miles.)

Mine has a bit of play but sounds like a lot less than yours. My overall linkage is pretty good now.

Since noone confirmed the thread size... ....I will confirm for anyone else who may want to swap out their shift joints.

It is 5/16th 24 right hand.

as is the new hardware you'll need since the OEM has the "bolt" built in.

Finally got around to installing my new joints after some other hardware searching and what a DIFFERENCE! I wish I did this years ago...
