Default Is the steering stem pressed into lower tripple tree

Installing new top and bottom triple trees along with new forks.
The lower triple tree slid out with the bottom bearing in place. I removed the snap ring at the bottom of the stem. Do I need to hammer it from top for it slide down or its pressed in( I thought once the snap ring is out it should slide)?
I have a press. Want to make sure.

It's a press fit. Make sure you pay attention to where the notch in the stem is located for you fork lock. You need to put it back as close to original as possible, or your fork lock will not work anymore.

Very good point. I was wondering what this notch is for!! Glad I did not think that its where you rest the chisel tip to hammer the stem out!!

I have built a few bikes and always send the lower triple and stem work to a shop. That is one job that needs to be done right.

Not saying that you shouldn't do it, I have no idea your level of experience, it's just over my head.

Did exactly that. Gave it to a buddy who has a machine shop and does it often.
