Tail of the Dragon...where to stay?
Trying to set up a trip to the Tail. Here is the thing... My wife and I will be riding from the Outer Banks of NC and our friends will be riding from Northeastern part of Texas. Planning on staying 3 days or so on the NC side so we can hit the tail one day and cruise some Blue Ridge Parkway.
We have never been to the Tail of the Dragon, so where is a great place to stay? Preferably something kind of resort feeling and not just a hotel room.
See, they wanted us to travel to Beaver Bend Park in Oklahoma (20hr ride for me) and said they were riding (2.5hr ride for them-woohoo) and not trailering. Talking to my wife, I said we can stay in a cabin anywhere. Why not make it a motorcycle destination closer to the middle? Hence the TOD. In order for me to sell this to our friends in TX, I have to have some decent accommodations and local attractions to convince them to make the trip.
Give me some ideas of "must see" places.

Wheels Through Time Museum on Maggie Valley is worth the price of admission. The scenery and roads in and around the area are really all the "other" attractions you'll need. This might help too.

As suggested above, stay at the Iron Horse Motorcycle Lodge and Resort. It's the Ritz of campgrounds.
Their website has maps of local rides and activities listed.

You can usually find a good deal on a cabin in Townsend which is in between pigeon forge and about 10 minutes from the foot hills parkway (which takes you to the dragon)..

Like they said... Ironhorse... but check out two rivers lodge http://www.tworiverslodgenc.com/ great people...and you are half way between Bryson City (good eats) and Cherokee (gambling..if you're into that) plus it's a wet county, so you can grab a drink in town, and be back at the lodge enjoying it
