Default 883 exhaust.

Hello gents,
I grew up riding crotch rockets and after being off a bike for a decade I finally graduated to a Harley yesterday. It's an old sportster and I was looking for any input on baffles. Right now it is straight piped. With my old bikes the baffles screwed in but these pipes are just tubes. They may be the original pipes with the baffles removed. I could drill a hole but that seems incorrect. Also where should I buy them. Thanks.

your bike has drag pipes. you would need to get a set of mufflers to put baffles in.

check the for sale section, lots of people post up their stock pipes for dirt cheap.

Or, you can do what many do and make a set of baffles. Google "homemade motorcycle baffles" and you'll find many ways to do this. It's very simple and inexpensive to do.

Thanks. I have looked into the homemade and also I have found some generic baffles online. If that doesn't work I will look for new pipes.

Let me see if I get this right, you've got straight pipes and you bought the little redbull can sized baffles for them ? If so you push the baffles in about 3/4" to 1" in from the tip, drill and use double nuts on the retaining bolts to hold them in. Put the bolt into the pipes at about the 7 o'clock position when you look at the end of the pipes from the rear of the bike and put the bolt in from the inside leaving the threads & double nuts on the outside of the pipe. Bolt will stay in if it gets loose this way.

I have not purchased anything yet however after a long walk through my local hardware store I found some stainless steel gutter guards. Already perforated steel. Seems like a cheap way to go. I also have seen people use stainless steel scrubbing pads. Not like SOS pads but just wound stainless steel strains. This seems a little sketchy to me. The OD of the pipes are 2 1/2" so baffles seem harder to find.

They make them that size keep digging. Unless your using the steel wool to wrap something it will just burn out or create too much back pressure.

I found these. For $35 I will give them a shot. If not I will be looking for some pipes.
