1991 883 Transmission not shifting
My son's ran his 1991 883 with no transmission fluid and now the gears are not engaging properly and when the wheel is spun a clicking notice is coming from the transmission in all gears and has no power to the rear wheel. I took the transmission off the bike and found that it looks like the gear dogs are not engaging completely between the gears. Otherwise everything looks fine, no cracked or missing teeth or dogs. Thinking it is the shifter detent. Any one experience something similar.

No, can't say I've ever run my 1991 without primary oil. The fact that the transmission and rear wheel don't communicate is not a good sign. Luckily, you already have the transmission out and seem more than capable of repair. Your son may not be as easy to fix, common sense is not so common.

When he was draining the motor oil he inadvertantly drained the primary as well without realizing he had done that. He replaced the motor oil thinking that was all he had done and we rode the next day until I realized what had happened. I give him a boat load of credit for trying to maintain his bike and his lesson learned. He attempted something that many on this site would not even think to do.
