Default Help with Primary Fluid

Hey Guys,

I have a 2008 1200 custom.

I'm baffled, I'm leaking Primary fluid from the inspection plate cover. Here's what I've done.

1) I replaced the rubber gasket.
2) I replaced the bolts along with new o rings
3) I put another new rubber gasket I
4) then I doubled the gaskets, and this worked for about two days and it's still leaking.

Any feedback will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Is it a factory cover? I wouldn't recommend ever double gasket. You might have a hairline crack or the cover is warped. I would also look into the torque specs and sequence for bolts...it makes all the difference.

Yes it's the OEM chain inspection plate. I thought about using a small bead of silicone around it

The Primary Chain Inspection Cover was changed around '08. It's my understanding that the new gaskets, formed to fit the revised cover, does not work with the old covers. You may need to buy the newer version of the inspection cover (probably 20 bucks), if the gasket hasn't been replaced in a while. If someone has a pic of the back of their '09 up cover, you might be able to compare it to your existing. The old gasket went obsolete years ago.

I have used a bead of RTV on several gaskets so that might do the trick but I might look into what HarleyScuba mentioned as well.

did u clean and dry all surfaces ?

what type of gasket was removed before installing the new one ?
was it the same one or did they give u a differ style / material ?

do u have the old gasket ? use that one , i bet it wont leak

if not get a new cover and gasket
exact as what harley scuba said above

I know they have two gaskets, one being rubber and the other a hard one. I believe the rubber one is the newer one. When I first got the back I put the hard one on and it really leaked bad. Is the rubber one the new one?

be sure to oil the little screw orings so they dont tear or shread up when tightening the cover down

the new cover is slightly thicker to make up the differ from the wider old gasket
the new gasket being thinner
so the old cover will not sit flush with the case ..

Thanks elfnyc

Looks like I'm going to get a new cover and gasket. This has been a constant issue with my by bike, I'd like to get past this pesky issue.
