Default Stator Question.,,

A friend of mine has a '06 1200 Sporty. He want's to ride thru the winter, so he bought some heated gear. The problem is, the gear works fine as long as the rpm's are over 2k, below that his dash lights come on, and the rpms get real low. My thought is the draw exceeds the output of the stator. Now, does Harley or anyone make a higher output stator? Or is adapting one from another model bike doable?.,,,

Cycle Electric makes a 32 amp, 3 phase, system that will replace the stock 20 amp system on that bike. It includes a new stator, rotor and regulator. The 3 phase systems are much better at producing power at lower RPMs, as well as having more amps.

Running a heated jacket/vest and heated gloves works fine with the stock system. I assume your friend bought everything in the catalog, including heated underwear...........

Thanks, we'll give that a look. You'd would think the bikes system could handle heated gloves, heated helmet liner, heated vest, heated underwear, heated socks, and heated shoe liners, and a heated cell phone warmer. But Noooooooooooooooo.,,,

Just get a stator from a 2007-up.

You can't just pump 32 amps from the 07up stator into a regulator that only designed to handle 22 amps, you would have to replace the entire charging system which is what the Cycle Electric system does, and with better quality parts. The 3 phase CE system also solves the lack out output at low RPM's.

Tell him to switch off his gear before he comes to a stop (not very practical), or alternate devices. I had a bike that would run my socks or gloves, but not both. It took a small amount of effort to operate two switches (too lazy to wire a SPDT switch), but I would keep warm.

You need one of these for all that lot!

Joking aside, this is really easy to work out. All you need is a multimeter to check amp draw and voltage drop on the bike, while all that lot is switched on. You could then disconnect some of them until you have a set-up that works.

I have never come across anyone who uses that combination of heated gear! Where the heck is he planning to ride?

Yes, you need to use the later regulator. And the connector won't match, so that must also be changed.

I installed a stator and regulator from a Big Twin, 32 amp, and only had to modify the harness. It was the least expensive option for me, small fixed income, and was done for under $150.00. I would have much preferred a three phase set up just couldn't scrape that kind of money together.
