1999 Sportster Issues
Hey guys, brand new to the forum so hello!
Anyways, I have a 1999 Sportster XL1200C that's making me gray in the hairs.
When it's cold, It runs beautifully, but as soon as it gets up to running temperature it abruptly sputters out and dies. After dying it won't start until it's freezing cold again.
I've given it a full tune up (spark plugs, wires, ignition coil, air filter) as well as a new battery and ignition module. I also keep the battery plugged into the trickle charger.
I'm an apt car mechanic, but new to motorcycles. But at this point I am totally stumped, any leads guys?
- And thanks =]

Could check your air cleaner. Make sure it's clean......another thing you can try is swapping back the old coil. I know if coils get hot they can cut out. And when it cools down it behaves. The only other thing I can think of is it's overheating. But if it overheating you'd usually see a bunch of white on your plugs indicating it's running lean.

I have a buddy with a 2001 1200XL. His was doing something similar to what yours is doing.
When it got up to operating temp it would sputter and kick and die. It wouldn't start until it cooled down.
His issue was he put drag pipes on and didn't rejet his carb. And his bike was overheating. Pulled his plugs and they were really white. Basically it was running too much air and air heats up faster then fuel. So after a rejet it stopped overheating.
