I could be wrong (ask my ex) but I think I read on here somewhere that if you switch the petcock to reserve it negates the vacuum line. I searched for the thread where I read that, but couldn't find it.

Don't know if that's so or not but I have left my petcock in the reserve position before after turning off the engine and didn't flood the carb. I wouldn't think the petcock would be designed not to stop the flow when the engine is turned off.
Got one of those cheap siphon things from auto zone, in the trash now. Going to remove tank, and pour it out of filler. What is best way to get all fumes out of tank? I will be doing some grinding and possible welding.

Haven't tried it but I have heard you can use dry ice to force the fumes out. Let us know if it works. If we don't hear back from you we can assume it didn't work!
the best way to get he fumes out is to let the tank air out with the cap off for a few days, preferably in the sun .... when I was in welding school they said the best way to weld a gas tank was to fill it almost full with water and turn the tank so that the spot you are going to weld was at the top with the air bubble under it...But I just air the tank out and go at it..be careful of heating the tank to much as the thin metal can warp from the heat if you are not careful..
