Default Oil filter change mess

ok, im stumped, what do you all use to keep from making a mess when you take off the oil filter. As I see it, when I take off the filter, all the oil in the filter in going to run down the side of the motor.

Ive seen a couple of post of one saying punch a hole in the filter and drain it, another said to use a 2 liter bottle, I didnt quite undertand that one tho

I'm gonna guess that the bottle trick is to cut a plastic bottle and slip it over the filter as you remove it to catch the oil drip. If you can cut the hole only big enough for the filter to enter, the taper might hold the dripped oil. Cut the bottom of the bottle out also, and the resulting tube could be used as a funneland for filter wrench access.I'm gonna try that one!

After you drain the engine, take something like an ice pick, poke a hole on the bottom 6oclock position of the filter, BUT, first put a piece of a plastic milk jug or plastic pop bottle UNDER the filter that is long enough to make to oil flow past the engine cases. Also poke a hole at 12 oclock on the filter[ top of filter] this will help the oil to drain faster. Let it ALL drain, be patient, and you will have VERY LITTLE oil on your bike.

That's exactly my routine, it seems to work the best, at least for me. I don't usually get more than a drop or 2 on the bike.

Now if you really want to make a BIG mess....try changing the oil while the bike is on a motorcycle jack.

A sheet of tin foil formed into the shape you need will do the job as well.
