It's funny that you write "oh no, not another..." I am on a e46 fanatics forum for my 325ci BMW and when someone new brings up oil... it is a freakin show! So many people bashing about the oils and what brand and scolding the OP for not searching the forum first... it's a mess. I am actually glad to see this here. I was going to ask if I should buy oil from HD dealership or if there was a tried and true alternative. I use Mobil1 for my BMW, so it sounds good to me.

Any tips on changing the Trans oil? lessons learned... Don't dos...?

A good friend of mine works at HD, graduated from UTI. He recommends you get the Syn-3 from HD... it's an oil you can use in both the engine and the primary. He says it's a little bit more money, but it pays for it self in that it breaks down slower and maintains it's viscosity better. plus you're only buying one oil for both applications.

Just food for thought.

here are a few discussions... as you'll see, there's a debate amongst everyone and they all know better than the other.

http://easyrider.easyrider.com/syn3.htm

So there - read up and make your decision based on the information. I have mobil1 just like the first responder posted... mostly because I think the Syn3 is overpriced and not as high of quality (you're paying for the name)... but to each his own. Some swear by it.

Hows that for a non-answer! HAHA

Default Hey, another oil thread!

Ok, I'll chime in. Sounds like you are new to HD and bikes in general. I am relatively new myself.

I've changed my own oil and had the dealer do it. My recommendation? Why not use whatever HD recommends for your year bike until you have a good reason to change to something else? I run Syn 3 in my 2011 1200C. If that is also recommended for your 2000, use that in both (again, if recommended for your 2000) holes.''

Any oil that meets the specs should be good to go. HD's oil filters are top quality, for what it's worth.

yes, you will be fine...20w50w is almost the same as 75/90 gear oil...motor oil and gear oil are graded on different scales so the numbers are different...
