Just a FYI - I ran the gauges today and the gear indicator worked on my sportster so it could be your firmware version.
Techmount.com indicated they still have generation 3 mount available (product must have been discontinued) that would place any device in front the tank but it is a bit pricey. They have many different types of mounts for PV, GPS, Cell, cameras, tablets, etc. The newer mounts are not as pricey...just posting the information in the event someone is looking for a similar mount.
I bought the PV from Fuel Moto last year. I tried to use the gear indicator but it would not work I called. I called Fuel Moto and was told its not enabled on the PV. They did not Know when it would be.

Update on mounts...today my unit fell off the Powervision quick release mount with visor....not once but twice. Damn, it's a good thing that cable was securely connected to the unit or it would have been hopping along the freeway.
I guess that is why many secure/screw the unit to the mount....which I intend to do once Jamie adjusts my map to eliminate decel popping.

If you spend 100 bucks for that mount we'll have Charley arrest you for misconduct. At the minimum he'll have you take his bike apart and scrub everything till it shines.
Look, the thing is on your bike for 4 days tops and then goes in the drawer and you gonna forget you had it, why does it matter where it's mounted on the middle or not?

My PV was on the bike 24/7 since I used the gauge function to monitor certain things i.e. temp, rpm, voltage, etc. I do agree Techmount is pricey...I paid about $100 for the mount. So if you are not going to keep it on the bike and only use it for autotune or to flash a tune, it really doesn't matter what kind of mount you use. However beside aesthetics if you plan to keep the PV on the bike, it was well worth it to position the PV in a good location i.e. in line with your line of sight to traffic and easy reach while riding.
