Default Bought Used 72, massive wobble

So, bought a 72 from some dude and took for a ride today. I almost pulled off the road the wobble was so bad. Noticed mostly when I decelerate, but I took up to 75 or so and literally felt I was going to crash.

I should have suspected an issue because owner said he was tightening up the spokes according to some you tube video to correct for wobble. I just thought he was nuts, but I'm out there looking at spokes and some are easily moved by hand.

Doesn't seem wise to me to just crank them all up tight, etc. I have a good mechanic, but I'm afraid this is going to be a constant problem. Never had a single problem with wobble in any bike ever.

I know this has been kicked around a lot just appreciate thoughts

You need to get them tightened properly, and check them regularly. There was an issue with some of the early Seventy Twos and this, so talk to a dealer and they might do it for free.

I did talk to HD and they said no recalls for that VIN. I'll probably just give up and take to mechanic, probably needs whole bike checked over....not my week man

If he tightened them and didn't have the rim up on a truing stand, that wheel's probably shaped like an oval right now. Truing a laced rim is a pain in the ***, let the shop do it.

I think he just put on a little lift and dicked around. So, if its really messed up are those wheels history?

It wouldnt have to be out of true too far to wobble. The cheapest thing to do would pull the wheels and take them someone with experience truing wheels. Other than being out of true your rims are probably fine

As said multiple times above, take it to someone that really knows how to true the wheel. An indy shop is probably your best bet.

I grew up working in bicycle shops, and saw so many wheels that customer's had tried to "fix"...

Very doubtful that he did any damage to the wheel by playing with the spokes...

Sounds to me like more than spokes on the wheel. Probably fork or bearing issues if its happening in decel
