Did you loosen the locknut when you tried to readjust? Or are you turning the locknut and not the adjustment screw?

I backed off the lock nut first the the hex wrench was used and forced when I realized that I had done a boo-boo.

That's a great suggestion. I can't get to it until the weekend.
If I'm following your thinking, I may have backed the bolt far enough out that I simply ran out of thread. Is that right?
Sounds good, I'll report back when it's done.
Have a great day!

Yes maybe, Hold the nut and try to finger thread it back in first. Then follow the instructions of getting your primary chain adjusted to specks in that video posted on the first page of your post.

Take a look inside that hole at the threads man. If they are damaged it should be easy to tell. You might have cross threaded the stud when you tried to put it back. That cover is made of soft metal.
that cover is very easy to take off the bike if you need to fix the threads or replace it, if you have any type of experience with tools (like you say you do) than you'll be able to do it at home.
Don't re use gaskets they are less than $10 for a new one.

Problem Resolved. Thanks Hotlap!
The Harley dealer called after removing the primary chain cover, informed me that the threads were shot and I would require a new cover at a cost of $365+tax and the down time at least 2 weeks due to parts availability.
I directed him to not order the part that I would be there shortly to pick it up. I looked up an automotive machine shop nearby with good online references. Within one hour the part was heli-coiled and I was assured that the resultant part was stronger than the original. Cost of service $35 The Harley dealer put it back together and I'm riding my bike again. This saved me a ****-pot full of money. Thanks Hotlap and all of you for your valued input.
