Hello Fellow HD riders and My Question
Good Afternoon Everyone,
I am new to this forum and have a question. I have a '13 Sportster 883 Iron and I am looking at the Vance and Hines Short Shots as an upgrade. The dealership is telling me it will be just under $1400 for the exhaust, upgraded air cleaner, chip and programming. My question is this a realistic price. I know the short shots are $450 and upgraded air cleaner is 150-300 but is the chip needed or is there a most cost efficient way to do this project. Thanks in advance for any help!

thats probably $1000 in parts and $400 in labor.
Short shots $450
intake $200
tuner $350
those are easy installs you should try doing it yourself and shopping elsewhere, you could save yourself some money
Check out the parts at DK customs and their are planty of "How To" videos on Youtube

If you're somewhat mechanical or know someone who is, do the work yourself.
You can find the parts at Amazon or or E bay cheaper then the dealer. Dealers normally charge MSRP plus tax with no discount.
Fuel Moto supplies tuners with unlimited maps at very competitive prices, and has great reputation.

DK Customs for air cleaners (forum sponsor) always quick with service and advice.

do it all yourself. the first few times you make upgrades yourself, it will cost you a bit more than usual because of the need for tools. as you go on, you will accumulate tools and the cost will drop dramatically.
i would just ride the thing for a while before adding anything. 1400 is a good amount of scratch that can be better spent.
do a little research on tuners, a/cs, pipes and all. dealers will rob you blind if you let them.
scour the forums.

Welcome to the forum! One suggestion I would make to you is if you are serious about the V&H Short Shots would be to add some DK Custom Products Thunder Torque Inserts.
The Short Shots are known as low and mid range performance killers, the TTI's are designed to bring back the low and mid range torque by increasing exhaust gas velocity and scavanging. The Thunder Torque Inserts will deepen the tone of the pipes removing that bright brassy sound you hear in the Short Shots and the Thunder Torque Inserts will smooth throttle response and help prevent reversion of fresh air in to the pipes.
Running your Short Shots with stock baffles out and W158 TTI's installed will improve your low and mid range performance and deepen the tone of the pipes.
This video will let you hear the tone differences with the TTI's

you can run the shorts by itself. no problem. once you add on the hi flow air cleaner you will need the fuel management system aka tuner.

it took every bit of my being not to mention the "originality" and "efficacy" of v&h [insert length] shots.
