Default Bobbed Fender Mud Guard

I just chopped up the rear on my iron, I was hoping to re-use the mud guard that is riveted into the front of the fender (the one sitting up against the frame right under the seat. I cut off to much for it to sit in the correct position.

Those of you with self bobbed fenders, have you eliminated that mud guard completley? Has that caused any issues? there are exposed wires under there, right in the path of debris.

Has anyone out there done something different to protect that spot? Any ideas?

Thanks.
