Default How to change rear brake pads on 2014 XL883L

I am new to this forum. I recently bought a 2014 Sportster 883L which has very limited brake on its rear. I am planning to change the rear brake pad by myself. I saw couple of videos and post online but nothing specific to 2014 sportster 883 model. If one of you have done the video please share, appreciate your help. I would like to know.
1. The socket size for the rear brake pad pin so that I can buy the right toolsets
2. The option to change the rear brake pads without removing the calliper.

I have attached the photo of my rear brake caliper. It looks like if I would be able to remove the pin that's holding the pads I would be able to get to it and replace.

Thanks a bunch. Happy Riding everyone!

You will have to remove the caliper to get the pads out. If you're not comfortable, removing 2 bolts to slide the caliper off the rotor, get someone else to do the job.
The job is easier to do then you think.

Welcome to HDF from the UK. You are missing the most vital item from your list:

3. factory service manual!

With that by your side you will have all you need to know, including the answers to 1 and 2.

Buy (or "find" online) the FSM. Your brake pad job should be SUPER easy. Look up "delboys garage" on youtube. He walks through the process very well. You do NOT have to remove the caliper. You just remove a pin cover (flat head) and an allen bolt and they will literally fall out.

Did anybody look at the picture in the initial post? That caliper looks different, the pin on pic does not require allen wrench. Did H-D change the provider of brakes?

yes. it is different. i saw this post last night and waited for someone to chime in and it just didn't happen. now i see people responding without reading. there where a ton of changes in 2014. .....

still the same principle though. pull the bolts that retains the caliper, rock it back, pull the pin, remove old pads, and reverse with new pads. just like any other caliper.

bleeding processes is the same as it ever was.... same as it ever was....
get a service manual, man.

Thanks to all for the reply. I bought the service manual today. I will try to first see if I can remove the brake pads without removing the calliper. If that doesn't work then I will follow as per the instructions in the manual.

Well done - it's much easier for us to help you if you get stuck, than to start describing how to do it from scratch. Let us know how you get on - we'll still be here!

I too was wondering if the rear brake pads can be changed on a 2014 Sportster without removing the caliper. It looks like if I were to remove the pad spring and remove the pad pin, I might be able to pull the pads up and out, just as easy as on the 2013 models.

Does anyone think this is possible? Newhogger, were you able to do it?
