Default Rear axle nut size

2011 Sportster Low XL1200L
I am prepping to get things ready (making sure I have all of the necessary tools) to replace my rotor and relocate the caliper this weekend. I need to remove the rear axle nut but don't have a sock that fits. I tried a 35mm socket and it appears to large since it has slight play. I have an adjustable wrench but that does not allow me to torque the nut to spec. I measure the nut and it is about 1 1/2". Axle size is 25mm.

And just in case you are wondering....I have a manual. There is nothing about rear axle nut size in it.

Thanks

I just changed the rear tires on my 2015 Iron 883 and it took a 36mm on the left and a 28mm on the right. I don't think it changed from 2011 until now. I'd check your socket again to be sure. I know somebody said they used a 1 1/4 inch on their 2011 72 when I was searching.

36mm, on the large side with the emergency clip. i used vice grips on the other side just to keep the axle from moving, which it didn't.

Yeah when I did the tire change I got the 28mm for the right side but it stayed still like yours did. I definitely need one of those calipers; it's next on my list of things to get lol

Just remeasured the nut and it's 1 1/4 in. Picked up a 32mm which is the closest to 1 1/4" and the 32mm is a 6 point socket vs a 12 point on the 1 1/4" (maybe just the limited inventory)

Thanks

okay now that I got the axle nut size as 32mm.

Anyone now the torque spec on a 2011 XL1200L...my manual says 95-105 ft lbs. Is this right? Just seems rather high.

Earlier models are 72-78 ft lbs but I believe had different type of bearings and would lock up if torque too much.

My manual called for the same torque rating if I remember correctly. Anyway I torqued mine to just over 100 ft lbs. If it's what the manual calls for then that's probably what I'd do. At least as far a's torque settings.

Are you referring to a genuine Harley manual? If so you are right! So why question the 'bible'?! It's a big nut on a big bolt, so needs a decent heave to keep it tight.
