Default Switching to synthetic next oil change, question about filter.

I know I need the 30 micron oil filter. I did a search on here and it looks like I need p/n 63805-80A. Which is right here:

http://www.harley-davidson.com/store...12-6380580a--1

But it doesn't say it's 30 micron. The other oil filter when I searched the HD website states it's 5 micron. Why wouldn't they state that 63805-80A is 30 micron?

Just want to make sure this is the correct filter to use.

Don't get too wound up over changing oil and filter, use the stock filters for your bike, which is probably that one. I've been running my Evo Glide for several years on synth, due to my S&S engine, and all is fine. Unfortunately the MoCo doesn't give us technical info like that.

I went with Mobil1 full syn and the K&N chrome hex nut filter. Haven't had any issues and the bike ran great on its first all day ride this past weekend.

I use the -80A filter, I believe it is the 30 micron spec. Sportster oiling systems are more of a high flow/low pressure design (roller bearings, etc.) so there is some debate whether the newer 5 micron filters restrict flow, or go into bypass mode. I'm switching to Mobil 1 (15W50) when my next oil change comes around, but plan on using the -80A filter as usual.

Yea the thread I read last night was a few years old so I wasn't sure if it was still relevant. I'm going to go with the 80A as well.

Not sure about the oil yet. It's either going to be Amsoil or Mobil 1 synthetic. Pretty sure both are just as good.

Been using the M1 15W-50 for a looooong time. Takes a beating and the motor parts stay in pristine shape. No complaints there.

Somewhat recently (the last 2-3 oil changes) been using NAPA gold (made by Wix) filters. Easier for me to get, cheaper, and they're high quality and work just as well as HD. Been using NAPA Gold on lots and lots of other bikes and vehicles for a long time, including customer bikes and some of my other personal bikes, so I figured I'd consolidate. They're every bit as good.

Black part numbers: Wix 51215, NAPA 1215 and Chrome is Wix 51225, NAPA 1225.

I wouldn't get too worried about the micron rating. Filters are measured on a nominal and absolute filtration basis. HD does not mention which number they advertise. You can have a "5 micron" filter that is only 5% efficient at 5 microns, or one that is 95% efficient. What is more of concern is bypass pressure, and flow rate, both of which the Wix/NAPA equal the OEM filter. They do this while being a "21 micron" filter as well.

I daily drive a Jeep XJ and the Wix filters are the best according to everything I've read on the forums. Don't have any experience with them on Sportsters though.

I agree with others. If you change your oil regularly, the filter should be the least of your worries.
