Default Do I have a Starter or Battery issue

Hi! I'm new to here. I picked up a 2008 Sporty 1200 Nightster. I have V&H Short shorts and Stage 1 Big Sucker Air Cleaner. But someone brought up a concern I never really thought about as this is my first Harely. I'll try my best to explain what happens.

When I turn the key to ON and hit the Run Button. I hear the fuel pump run and when I hit the start button. The motor turns over for a second then stops for a quick second then turns back over fast and starts right up. I didn't think of it as an issue till couple buddy's said somthing about it. They said maybe a battery going bad? Bad spot in starter? I can let bike sit all week or it can be cold or engine be hot and it always starts like that. No issues with dimming lights or battery dead after sitting for a week.

Should I be concerned? Or is this the way the 1200 turns over.

Welcome to the forum.

No big concern...common. Not knowing what kind of battery you have...it could be a lower CCA battery.

My bike did that until I changed the battery to a 16 cell Lithium with 480 CCA...and my other battery was still good. The Lithium battery is good for everyday use up to 1600cc. Bike starts right up now with no hesitation.

My two cents. Keep it on a battery tender.

Upgrade your battery cables and next time you need a new battery increase the CCA. Both battery and cables are bare minimum stock for the 1200. 883's no issue.

To be safe, check your cables, here is what I found.

Welcome from NC and to HDF.

If it's the OEM battery, this is normal as others have said. The CCA is usually 200, but a higher CCA battery will not have that hesitation.

Personal experience with (2) 1200 Sportsters in (2) years...both had same "hesitation" as described...
In BOTH cases, battery eventually failed and had to be replaced.
One of them stranded me at lunch time on a work day, the other just didn't make it through the night!
The hesitation was a sign of things to come.
There is NO hesitation with the new battery.
Now, start up is IMMEDIATE, almost violent in its abruptness and sounds great.
