Question Budget hot rod sportster input

Just picked up a 07 xl1200c. Wanting to do a budget hot rod build. In the last week I've installed Rush 3" slip-ons, k&n filter and xied's. Bike ran like sh*t when I first picked it up, but now runs beautifully. I have less than $3k in right now.

I will ride this bike regularly. I ride to work often and typically, my butt can't stand being on it any more than an hour at a time. I'm not willing to sacrifice reliability or streetability. With that being said, I'd like a fast sporty that's reliable and streetable. I will make an occasional run down the 1/8 mile with my sleeper sporty.

So, I think the next step is cams. Agreed? Recommendations for a bolt in cam?

Proper tune for cams, I'd assume would be next.

I might be satisfied after that. I'm also considering doing the install myself. I've installed many cams in cars/trucks, but never a motorcycle. With the proper tools and a manual, is it worth the money saved to perform myself?

get a tuner like DynoJet PowerVision while you're at it.

What sirhchris said. Infact, get it before the cams. I get that it might not seem "budget" now, but in the long run you have potential for savings by tuning yourself and doing other diagnostic work on it yourself.

Hammer perf 570 cams, drop them in and go! Designed for rubbermount 1200s as a bolt in cam.

What's your budget? That is the first question. a Mild port job on your heads from hammer, a set of their 560 cams would make a nice budget build bike that has some pep! Or their 1250 kit with the 570 cams. A lot of ways to skin a cat, a lot more ways to screw it up. I've seen it a million times. Budget builds that are not thought out and the power band has holes all over in it because it was a mismatched conglomeration

Im in a similar boat, looking for the next power upgrade.
Ive got Rush 1.75" slip ons and a DK Customs 587 AC, and PCV.
If I went with the 560 cams, would the exhaust hold me back?
