'86 Transmission help needed!
So I got an '86 883 that needed a new main shaft. I installed that pretty easy, popped the trans back in place and it doesn't feel like it is engaging to shift.
How do I know that the shift shaft is doing its job? After we install the trans do we have to the clutch/primary cover on before checking it?

You can shift it on the bench and verify its engaging, or do the same in the case. Keep in mind it needs to be spinning to properly shift or it's likely the dogs won't line up and it will seem jammed.
Also, did the shift ball get properly hooked up in the pawl mechanism? It's easy to let the lever drop when installing and miss the socket, thus no shifting!
