You may also want to check the fuses, my 07 was having similar issues. When I pulled the fuses they were rusty and had crud on them when I cleaned them up with the battery terminals and the problem was solved.

I actually went and bought a big package of 15A fuses to replace the ones there now. The issue seems to have gone away with the new Voltage Regulator; I suspect the old one was the source of the issue.

Welcome from NC. Sounds like you're on the right track on fixing her up! As mentioned, get a HD service manual. Can't wait to see and hear the real deal!

Bike is at the shop getting looked over, new Michelin Commander IIs, the brake rod replaced, and exhaust lined up.

The next round of upgrades will be stainless brake lines, new intake (HD Bobber style), Progressive 12" rear setup, Progressive front springs, and new fork and brake fluid.

I saw above that you are on the fuses, the two solenoids can give you fits as well even if the don't look so bad. Like the fuses they are exposed up through the 09, I had one go bad on me, felt like I was running out of gas, codes came up, luckily I had been forewarned and had a spare with me. You can get them at auto stores for under $10.

What wheels do you have on your nightster? Black hoop and stainless spokes? If so I may be interested in them when you swap them out.

OP is on a good path.
In other words, buy manual, full service especially critical fasteners checklist, replace consumables fluids filters plugs battery tires etc, lots of waxing.

FWIW I recall the '07 and early 1200N had a bulletin on water intrusion to the fuses located under the left side battery cover/ side cover/ tin. Inspect, clean or replace the fuse, add some di-electric grease here and there as preventive action. Also check the motor mount bolt on the left side of the front cylinder head...notoriously loosens. Ditto swing arm mounting bolts check torque.

I enjoy my 1200N plus Progressive front fork springs best $100 spent on this bike ever.

Have fun.

Well, it is a good thing I bought the bike when I did. I found out yesterday that my wife is pregnant.
