Default 2005 sportser 1200 xlc check engine light going on and off

hello. I'm new here, and looking for a little insight. I have a 2005 sportster 1200 xlc. Recently the check engine light has been going on and off. When I ride on the freeway it goes away. When I ride slower it goes on and off. Has anyone else experienced this? The bike runs fine. Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

There's a "How To: Diagnostic Trouble Codes" sticky thread at the top of this section, follow the instructions and post back the code results.

Check and clean your battery connections.

The overvoltage condition typically comes from either a bad electrical connection or failing voltage regulator. Since you aren't seeing the problem on the freeway, where vibrations usually smooth out, I would look first at the wiring.

Loosen, clean and tighten the connections at BOTH ends of BOTH battery cables.
Do the same for the wiring from the voltage regulator back to the battery.
The voltage regulator gets its Ground connection via the bolts that mount the regulator to the frame. Remove the bolts, clean them and the surface that contacts the frame.

thank you cHarley. I'm gonna work on it today. Would a low battery charge be a culprit in giving the diagnostic code?

Not that I've seen, that would typically give you Low Voltage codes.

I think I fixed it. Took out the battery and noticed that the screw and washer that attached the gound line to the battery were welded together somehow. There was also some burn residue on the eyelet of the cable. I took a wire brush and cleaned the ends of both cables, used a new screw and washer for the negative connection, put the battery back and took it for a ride. Happy to say that the check engine light didn't come on once. Thanks for the help.
