Default Repair or replace a Speedometer

I am new to the site and tried to post earlier but I guess my post about some speedometer issues never posted. So here I am again....

I am new to Harley's and brought home an 05' 1200R Sportster yesterday. It has a non-working speedometer so I did some research and have done some trouble shooting but have not spent that much time looking into it yet.

I believe the speedometer itself is the issue. Other than replacing the speedometer, is there anyone that can repair my existing one? Or, other than EBay, is there a good source for a replacement?

Now just incase you are wondering why I think its the speedo and not the sensor.....

- The Odometer still works just fine. It counts miles like it should.
- The back light works.
- I figured out how to check the diagnostic codes in the speedometer and it has no codes at all.
- The Tach works fine. No problems with it at all.

What the Speedo does do is this...

When you key it onetime, it will normally try to cycle around the gauge and then land at about the 6 o'clock position. If you key it off and quickly key it back up again, most of the time it will try to land somewhere between 0-10mph. When riding it around, it just ends up where ever on the gauge.

So I am guessing since the odometer works fine, then the speed sensor is okay. Really the only thing that does not work is the needle on the speedometer itself.

I did find a couple of old post on another site where someone had the exact same issue. He tried a number of things and the only fix was replacing the speedo.

I still have not had a chance to go through all the connections and I am still planning on doing it but if anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears!

I know this place is across the country from you, but you might call them and see if they can fix it or refer you:

http://www.sandiegothespeedoshop.com/

The homepage says they can repair motorcycle gauges, so that's encouraging. Please let us know what they say, a lot of us probably have business for them if they can fix Harley speedos. I know my 1991 would be hard pressed to find a replacement stock gauge for if it died.

Cool, Thank you for that. I will contact them and see what they say. I certainly dont want to drop $300 on a new one. I still want to do go through it all and double check connections and such but from the way it is acting, I would almost bet money on it being the speedo.

Just sent them a message and while looking over the site, it says they can repair Harley gauges.

When I find out more, I will let you all know.

That place is not that far from me, great to know about if they can set you up. I'll post up the information on xlforum as well. Lots of dead gauges on old bikes over there.

Well I just spoke to a very nice gentleman on phone and he said they could repair it. I gave him a description of what it is doing and he thought the same thing as I do about it being the actual little motor that controls the needle itself.

He said probably $140-$150 to fix it. But then I have shipping cost too so now I am wondering if it is worth sending to him or just keeping my eye out for a decent used one. I did call my local Harley Dealer and they said it would be about $300 with tax.

I did download a speedo app for my cell so that will have to get me by for now!

New idea now.

Why not just try and replace the bad stepper motor myself? Its $5.00 to $8.00 part and if I can figure out which one I need, I dont see why I can not just replace it.

Anyone have any experience with this?
