Pound for Pound for the best hot rod bike is a Dyna. Get one with a hopped up 103 on a bike that weighs around 550 lbs and they are fun all day....Just my .02

C'mon now, even the Sportsters weigh more than that. Most Sporties weigh in around 565 lbs wet. The Dyna's are weighing in at around 675 lbs wet.

FWIW, my FXR is exactly 626 lbs wet and outfitted as I have it with bags & fairing.

IMHO, you didn't give us 'all' the information. Is your wife
gonna want to do 'long' trips on the Sporty or want to
ride with you on the 'new' bike ?? This will make a world
of difference in the response... I'm lucky in that I have
access to both Sporty / Softail. For around town, I prefer
my OL's Sporty, but my FLS Softail definaltely has its place on
the open road on our longer roadtrips...

just an opinion....

She will not ride on the highway. For the longer rides, she will ride on the back with me.

I loved all my Sportsters. I'm just like you, I started doing longer rides and it's just not the bike for that. So I went up to a Dyna: A Super Glide Custom. Cool FXDXT Retro T-Sport bags, and a windshield. For all the riders who tell you that touring on a Sportster is absolutely possible, there are also guys who tour coast to coast on bicycles. The word "best" is not the same as "doable".

My Dyna had a Mustang Wide Vintage Solo seat, and the nice, big, matching passenger seat. My wife rode on the back twice, and said "Never again".

If you want to do longer rides, and you want your wife on the back, and you don't get a Touring bike, you will simply spend a ton of extra money making your Dyna into a Touring bike, except without the comfort.

If you're not into fairings and lowers and tour packs, get a Road King. I promise, you will not regret it.

Just for reference, my Dyna. I absolutely loved it, it was beyond gorgeous, but it wasn't the right bike for long rides, and it wasn't the right bike for carrying a passenger.

You guys are all wrong... Getting a dyna would make her want to ride her own bike. Get a dyna with a solo seat and tell her either ride her own or she can sit on the fender... Put a pillow and blankets on the couch first in case she doesn't agree.
