Question Timing (Nosecone) cover

Hey Guys, I got some new stuff for my Sporty and part of it is a new ignition module. I am relatively new to Harleys, so this might sound like a dumb question, but, the cover on the nosecone is riveted on. Is there a replacement cover that will screw on after I drill out the rivets ? Or do I just rivet it back on with my trusty riveter ?

I think you can thread the rivet holes and change to a screw, but I've read that Harley may use special rivets (#8699) that can't break off inside. I'm sure they can be found aftermarket as well. I have the same setup but have never removed the cover.

I drilled and tapped mine when I installed my DYNA 2000i. Once you get the nosecone cover off, there is a thicker inner cover. It is held on with two screws. As I recall, I tapped the rivet holes to 8-32. That's a #29 drill bit.

You can install a replacement cover and use the screw holes that hold the inner cover ... you don't have to tap anything ... just make sure your new cover has the hole in the right orientation for the screw holes already there ...
