How it works:
The guy that sells the basket case or barn find does good.
The guy that buys the restored bike does good.
The guy that restores the bike always looses.
Do it if you plan on keeping it.

I second Triumph-Jerry, only do it if you want the bike and are planning to keep it and ride it for a long time to come. If you don't skimp, you'll spend a bundle and will never recover the investment.

here is my two cents. At the end of all the work, it will still be a 96 sporty. you will be able to sell it for about three grand, give or take. your first order of business. set a budget. your next step, make a plan for the build. the following and most important part. buy a sheet of poster board and fill the whole thing with these words. stay on budget and stick to the plan!! make it as big and bold as possible and hang it behind the bike where you have to see it FIRST. if not you will quickly have big twin money invested in your project. if you plan on riding it for three to five years, then it may be worth it. if you ride it for only a year or so. then get a total of what you spent, subtract three grand, this will be what you sell it for, the rest divide by twelve and that is what your monthly bike payment was.

94-99 XL has a rebuildable crankshaft.

NADA now shows the 96 standard as vintage, since is more than 20 years.
Very good condition, $3200
Good condition, $1800
Fair condition, $955
