I know I'm probably not going to get it and you guys can make fun of me for even suggesting it (fuel injection, modern engine, 1337 vs 1200, cross pipe), but I thought I would pose the question: Is it possible to get the same sound or tone on a modern day sportster that Nikki Sixx had on his 87 Heritage Softail as heard in the music video? To me that is the iconic HD sound.

Classic. Saw the Crue in LA twice during the GGG tour, and saw a show at the The Body Shop in Hollywood that same weekend. Those were the days!

Curious if the exhaust sound was actually from Sixx's bike or if it was something that they snagged elsewhere?

Technically speaking, meh. You can make your bike sound however you want in a recording studio.

 

The wife and I have been told that we were born 10 to 15 years too late multiple times (I'm 32 and shes 29). She's an Aerosmith fanatic, she can probably tell you what Stephen Tyler had for breakfast this morning, while I'm more of a Crue/Zeppelin/VanHalen fan.

From what I've read, it was Vince on Nikki's bike during the video, but for studio production, I have no idea.

I'd doubt it.

As a professional established group (Mot Crue) utilizing their sound engineer/ studio would enhance any tones on their music recording to attain that "perfect" sound they desire. Even a simple echo.

That what I would do; enhance all sound to perfection on my recordings.

 

Hear is the one I am wishing for. If someone would develop a way to make my Sporty sound like this they could dig deep into my wallet.

However, by neighbor's ultra classic has a tone close to the video. Straight through baffles with fiber packing around them.
