I'm pretty sure FI sportsters started in the US in 2007 but were available overseas (europe?) starting in 2006.

This has to do with how "model year" is defined from country to country.

In the US, you could buy a "2007" model year bike in 2006.

In other countries, if the bike is sold in 2006, it's a 2006 model year bike according to local regulation, no matter what the manufacturer says.

So it's not a matter of HD making overseas EFI bikes before the US bikes, it's simply a quirk of how different countries define a bike's "model year."

The year of the bike is whatever the VIN says it is, no matter what country or what reseller says or what year it was sold.

Since 1981 it is the 10th digit. For a 2006 it will be 6 and for a 2007 it will be 7.

Now the question is, when they are switching from Carb to a FI on a certain model, do they switch the year digit at the same time or not. My guess is they dont. So on a year you could see both FI and Carb.

The year according to the VIN is NOT the same as the year listed on the registration paperwork.

If you were in Japan and bought a bike with a VIN that corresponds to a 2007 model year bike, but you bought it in December 2006, the registration paperwork would list the bike as a 2006, despite what the VIN said. Japan goes by the date of manufacture, not the VIN.

In the US, we register vehicles based on the manufacturer's model year as reflected on the VIN. This is not the case in all countries.

That's good to know, and that's only another reason to determine the correct year model one should refer to VIN codes provided by HD.

Thanks for your help!! According to the VINs, both bikes are 2007's (7K - i.e. built in 2007 in Kansas). I guess its true in Japan, that the model year is determined by when it was sold, not by the VIN. Thanks again!!!
