The 404 and the 401 150/80-16 are both rated to carry 760 lbs. The only thing I dont like is the 404are jap made.Other then that, the 404s seem very good.

I put a 404 on the rear of my wife's Heritage Softail and she got 5,000 miles out of it when she normally gets 10 to 12,0000. The 404 is made in Japan(maybe that is why it is on so many metrics),while the 401 is made in the USA. The 404 has a lower weight rating and isin general an inferior tire.

The 404 cost more than half what a 401 does, but only gets half the mileage, so there is no cost advantage. In fact the cost is more because you have to figure in the changing twice as often which adds to the cost.

Hmmmmm, not what I am seeing at all Bill. I already got 5k on my 404, and it shows no sign of being "done".

Not to stir up a stink..........but the website I get my tires from states the 404 is a good tire for smaller bikes and sportster but not suitable for larger bikes and baggers

Default RE: Dunlop 401s vs 404s

I had these same questions back in March when I was shopping for tires. I couldn't find anywhere that listed any significant difference between the 401 and 404. I even talked with Dunlop customer service, and they really couldn't tell me anything, except the 401 is a "better" tire we make exclusively for Harley-Davidson.

Ended up it didn't matter. Due to the strike, there weren't any 401 or 404 tires in the size I needed. So, I ended up with Metzeler tires. After about 8,000 miles, I'm really liking these tires, but my final judgement we be how many miles they last. I'll be interested to see if the 404 tires are lasting as long as the 401. If they do, I'll probably go that route on my next set. They're certainly less expensive.

My final judgement on tires is how they stick to the road, not the mileage they last. I am a firm believer in the fact that they are my number one safety item on the bike. I don't like the feel of the stock dunlops as they don't feel very firmly planted to the ground and that s shy I chose metzlers. Much better with the metzlers. I bought a 404 but never put it on and it is still in my garage. Mileage is not the final say so on motorcycle tires for me at all.

I remember you post way back when, I don't know how far you looked for them or it was justlocal. but the strike was just about over and alot of the 404 were available through in internet at pretty good price. that's where I bought mine.
being in the automotive bussiness there are statements on where the tires are made. since the strike I been told that a lot of the tires are madeout of the country.
