That is a great point OldFenderGuy.

I did remember looking in my service manual for the exact #. I thought it was around 22 but hell it might have been higher at like 27 for all I remember. I do remember having ample amps left over for my specific bike to run the jacket and gloves.

But again, good point. So everyone who reads these posts please make sure you do the math for YOUR bike. I know I spent the better part of a day running through this stuff last Fall before I purchased my gear. I'd hate to hear about anyone out there in freezing weather losing power.

I did the math on this last year. I found the numbers again;

The stock XL alternator can make 22 amps. And I think this is max amps at something like 3K rpm or something.
The bike takes around 12 amps stock just to run. SO that leaves you with roughly 10 amps to spare.

Gebrings gear requires the following amps:

gloves 2.2 amps
jacket liner 6.4 amps
pants 3.6 amps
vest liner 4.5 amps
socks 2.2 amps

So as you can see, all together you'd be way maxed out and drain your system.

My serv manual shows 22a @ 3,600 rpm. I assume this variesin a linear fashion and thespreadsheet below would showme that I amoften operating in the 2,500-3,000 rpm band producing 15-18 amps. I see why the battery tender is suggested.

Hmm, spreadsheet did not post well. Let's try this

RPM- 1ST- 2ND-3RD-4TH- 5TH--AMPS @
2500- 20- 28- 37- 45- 53-- 15.28
3000- 24- 33- 45- 54 -63-- 18.33
3500- 28- 39- 52- 63 -74-- 21.39
4000- 32- 44- 60- 72- 84-- 24.44

7 watts (.6 a) ea running / 27 (2.4a) watts ea turn / 25 (2.1a) watts brake /55/60 watt headlight (4.5/5a)

My lighting amps are 7.4amp without turn/brake lights on (I have the rear run/turn/brake module)
