Default Question for ALL sportster owners - Please reply

I have a question for all who own a sporster. Irecently purchaseda 2006883 Custom and after riding a few times I love it. However, the past two times I've rode it, i've had problem with the oil filler cap. Due to the location (almost directly under the seat) it somehow opens during riding. For those not familiar with this cap, you have to press which pops the cap up then you must turn counterclockwise to remove. When this cap 'pops' to the open position, it allows oil to exit the tank, causing a mess and a creates a huge potential problem.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this same problem or have heard of something similar. I was at a HD dealer today and it seems like the 07 and 08 models have a small space between the seat and the oil cap. My seat basically sits right on top of this, which makes me believe something is not right. I bought this bike with only 1100 miles so I can't imagin anything could be seriously wrong with it.

What's your weight? I'd guess the sides of the seat are just compressing more tha others might be...? Otherwise, maybe the previous owner was weighty and compressed the seat.

Never heard of that problem, and my '06 XL883C has no such problem.

I'm 185 lbs. The previous owner was no larger than I.

06 1200C, never had that happen, may be a faulty cap.

If you have to replace it, you might look at the Oil Temp. Dipstick as a replacement. It installs and removes easier than the stock stick and gives you a temp. guage to boot.

Thanks for the replys. The cap is locked down tight. All it does is compress in until it clicks. Like I mentioned before, my seat sits nearly right on top of the cap. I'm thinking there might be a space issue...
