Are Sportster sales dead... or just really slow
Not sure whats happening to Sportster sales, but right now they just seem to suck. Dealers have boxed models stacked, no solid responses to my wheels & deals ad, and just a bunch of tire kickers on e-Bay. Whats wrong with e-Bay listinghttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...31863&rd=1444 views, 17 watchers, and no bids. Do you think they are sitting on the curb as shadow bidders? Do you think they are trying to sell a Sporty too? OK I'm listening......

"$10,400 invested" Funny word, "invested"... Sales are down right now because over half the country is in a motorcycle-no-ridey-winter.
As we get to spring, bikes that are priced right will begin to move. Unless you're a dealer, you're not going to get dealer prices.

I watch a lot of them out of curiosity to judge where the market is going. I am sure a lot of the watchers are also potential sellers watching to see how you do. The market appears to be very soft and getting softer.
I don't understand the comment in your ad that the bike is being sold with "no reserve" yet has a minimum bid. Isn't this essentially setting a reserve?

People don't tend to show any interest when something is overpriced. If the price is in the ball park they might consider making a reasonable offer.
Another example is your skull accessories. That in itself will turn off probably a majority of potential buyers because alot of people consider those types of thingsobjectionable.
I bought my 05 1200 used on ebay and bought a factory stock bike at a good price and made it the way I wanted it.

Bottom line, right now it's a 'buyers market' on all models, not just the Sportsters....
It's all a matter of supply and demand, and there are more people wanting to sell bikes than people wanting to buy, which tends to force prices downward....
During the past few years too many people purchased Harley's because it was the 'thing to do', and the majority of these bikes were financed.
After the new bike thrill wore off many would rather sell the bike rather than make monthly payments (including interest) on a vehicle that is seldom used.
Problem is that if you finance a bike the total 'loan payoff figure' might be as high, or higher than the cash 'out the door price' for a new model....

Wish it was like that here (australia) 20yo sporsters still go for around $8K, $11k+orc new for an 883 Low. $14k for the 883 custom on road. Couldn't justify buying used.
Big difference considering the dollars aren't that far apart lately (around 90c).
Had to potentially wait 6 months to get original bike I wanted (pewter pearl 883 Low)

Sportster shipments were way up last year. HD shipped 72,000 sportsters in 2007, up from 64,000 in 2006. All big twin shipments were way down. I think sportsters are selling ok, but I think the big increase is because many are sold overseas and the nightster model has been a very good seller. Most used 04-07883s sell for about $5,000 and the 04-07 1200s sell for about $6K-$7K. I think your price is to high as others have said. No one will pay 6,900 for a 883 when they can geta 1200 for about the same money.
