Got a dipstick in the mail this afternoon,I have a good many old stainless steel blades (flea market cheapos) floating around the desk drawers so I opted for a stubby to begin my project. I am planning to do more as I found it quite fun. I am going to make an assortment, I want a longer one right off the bat but the stubby has its charm also.
I twisted and rolled out the stick, this one came out quite easy.Ground down the knife end, got her hot enuff to melt the plastic ball and then poked it back in the hole. Seems strong enuff to me but I am considering filling the rubber seal up with steel epoxy (I love the stuff) It will make it heftier and stronger too I imagine...

I ground the saw/shark teethe in the top of the blade just because it looks baDASS. I am going to drill the indicator holes tommorow at work and also fill the rubber gasket with steel.

what yall think?

EDIT:I made the second longer one tonight its farther down in the thread...

x2, you are my kind of freak. That is the kind of mod that just rides around in your head and no one else ever knows what you are smiling about as you stare at the oil tank. An oil temp dipstick is actually a rather practical, but less personal mod. I do appreciate your talent wiyh the steel and creativity. This is why I am posting on Valentines day, and you are mixing steel epoxy! Have fun.

Nice idea. Good tool in a nice accessible spot.
I would make sure the stuff in the cap can't fall into the oil and mess with the system though, and that the heat of the engine and oil won't soften things up enough to cause problems.
Tempering is a consideration also, as far as what the blade can be used for.
I'd consider checking state laws for what size would keep it legal, or not, if you really care to be. Fluid level marks may make all the difference in making it legal in some states, or not.

A screwdriver, or torx or something could to the same thing also.

My first thought was it looks like it would be difficult to use (if really needed) without cutting yourself !!!!

While I think it's very cool I would also make damn sure that the blade is affixed securely. You don't want to drop anything in the oil tank.

Do you need a concealed carry permit? I wouldn'tcheck the oil in front of any cops...

Submit your idea to a novelty knife maker and see if you can get anyroyalties.
