Default bolt size on exhaust bracket?

Folks.. can anyone tell me the thread and length of the 5/16" allen bolt for the exhaust bracket that is mounted right by the belt sprocket on an 05 1200C? My brother is doing the work and rounded out the allen on the bolt thanks to Harley's cheap hardware and lack of anti-seize at the factory. He doesn't have the service manual to tell him the sizes. If you're looking at the belt sprocket under the cover, its the bolt at the 4 or 5 o'clock position.

Default RE: bolt size on exhaust bracket?

Are these for the muffler interconnect bracket? If it is, there are two bolts each that connect the mufflers to the interconnect bracket. You have to get underneath to get to the heads.

If these are the bolts you are looking for, then they are 5/16-18 x 3/4.

As far as the exhaust system goes, these are the only 5/16 bolts. The rest are 3/8.

I got this info from my parts book for a 2006 Sportster. It should be the same for a 2005 I imagine. I hope that helps.

If it is a different bolt, let me know and maybe I can find it. If not, pull that sucker out and go to a hardware store and try to match up.

As to anti-seize -- I am not sure I'd use anti-seize on those. I usually use blue loctite on my bolts. I'd rather take time getting them off, than having them vibrate off somewhere on the highway.

Cosmic, thanks for the info. They're not the ones on the interconnect so they must be 3/8. These are the ones that go into the bike under the transmission cover that must be removed. It's actually the bolt that you have to remove the shift linkage arm (on a 1200C) to get at.

Right on man. Glad you found it, I was just about to look again.

I just got the parts book recently and it has been invaluable. It is worth the bucks if you plan to keep the bike for awhile.

Pick something you like at Ace Hardware. 6 side Hex Head, 12 side Head, Allen Socket Head, Torx Head, Button Head, whatever floats your boat. I think most bolts on our bikes are Grade 5 (Three radial lines). I've got a variety based on location, function, etc.

Thanks for the tip! I'll see what's available and go from there. I guess it doesn't have to be a socket head as long as the threads are right. I learned more about fasteners in the past three days than I ever knew, so I guess that's a plus.

The HD Parts catalog online lists it as a grade 8-
4748 SCREW 3/8-16 X 1-1/8 socket head (Grade 8)
